Elke Marhöfer, Germany
Elke is invited through Iaspis and Valand School of Fine Art.
1.10 - 30.12 2010

Elke Marhöfer will put into practice a film project that she started 2009 in South Korea. The project is a research P'ansori music, an ancient Korean epic-song-form.

Together with friends she travelled to different places in South Korea. To collect stories, and to see how, and if P'ansori is still embedded in the society. As an outline they followed the wanchang 'Heungbo-ga', the story of to unequal brothers. They asked different people about
it, but what they found was going beyond the traditional repertoire, and an unbroken narrative .

The film will include documentary and fictitious storytelling, urban and rural situations, and different performative events. Building a new story by collecting many different, is using P'ansoris own instrumentation of collective narration.

Laurie Rosenwald, USA

5.4 - 5.9 2010

I am very, very happy to be back at Konstepidemin. The creative energy here is a bit different than that of New York; it doesn't have to be quite so commercial, and most of my friends here are more free to pursue their real artistic vision.

I've been working on animation in the last year or two. Very short, simple films done in a style that uses collage and humor blended together. David Sedaris is a writer that is very popular in the USA, because he's deeply funny. I've illustrated some of his stories for "The New Yorker" magazine, so I got t know him, and we collaborated on this Diary Entry he wrote:
DAVID SEDARIS DIARY: ERNIE

I'll be doing more in this Sedaris series while at Konstepidemin, as well as more animations I have written myself, like these. I hope you enjoy them:
YELLOWTAIL
THE NEW NEW YORK ETIQUETTE
US:A CYNICAL LOOK AT SARCASM

In addition I will work on a book titled "MEMWAH", a funny memoir. And I plan to start painting again. Naturally I will continue to pursue my work as an illustrator, and teaching as well. I teach a workshop called "How to Make Mistakes on Purpose" which is scheduled for the weekend of April 24 and 25 at Beckmans Skola in Stockholm.
Here is some info >>>

My third book, which I wrote here, is titled "All the Wrong People have Self-Esteem."
True, don't you think?

Studio 3
Gabrielle Grace Kauffmann, writer
, France

1.9 - 2.7 2010

Gabrielle Grace is working on a novel in English and French, /Comment Oublier un Ange - How to Forget an Angel/. It is a mosaic of places, times and languages, narrative, music and images, and a multimedia attempt at literature, though that sounds a bit gimicky. The novel tries to capture the fragmented love story of a heroine who is trapped in her imagination.

Just as stories tend to repeat themselves, this one resembles a spiral, an echo, a mirror. Perhaps it is also a story of longing - not only for another, but for a place and time lost. Ultimately, the longing for what Sanskrit has named "rase" - rapture - frees the heroine. It does all come together, in the end...

Marcello D´Angelo, Italy

4.10 - 20.1 2011

In Konstepidemin I'll translate in a sculpture a searching work on exchange and connections among people, cultures and entities theme.
I'll work on people giving and receiving subject, on space and life sharing and how we exchange feelings, also throw visible and invisible walls.

You'll often see me looking for materials in Goteborg building yards and industrial areas.
With a huge pleasure I'll fall again infected by this wonderful epidemical art place!

Studio Grindstugan

Simon Fujiwara, Tyskland

19.4 - 8.7

During his residency period for Iaspis in Gothenburg, Fujiwara will be working on his project Welcome to the Hotel Munber which will be presented at the end of his stay at the Goteburg Kunsthalle as part of the exhibition Disidentification.

For over three years Fujiwara has been scripting the life of his parents owning a hotel in 70's Spain under the Franco dictatorship, as an erotic novel. The incomplete manuscript of the novel, in which his parent's real life tales are told from the perspective of a repressed gay protagonist, emerged from Fujiwara's frustration at the lack of information on gay life in Franco Catalunya which was largely a result of the fascist regime's censorship of all things erotic.

In this sense, Welcome to the Hotel Munber can be seen as a reconstruction of a lost or impossible history. During the residency he will be planning a new installation: a reconstruction of the hotel bar that his parent's ran, in which he will perform readings from the fragments of the incomplete novel.

Fujiwara’s performance will pit the brutal sexual repression of Franco’s regime against the dilemmas of presenting intimate family history as erotica - a tale of personal and political sacrifices that ultimately lead to Fujiwara’s own exile in Mexico.

Ulrika Byttner, Frankrike

Invited by IASPIS Göteborg 2 - 30 Oktober

Ulrika Byttner trained in France in the 1990s and lives and works in Paris but her roots remain in Gothenburg. In recent years drawing has been her artistic medium of choice. Ulrika creates large-scale drawings abounding in human figures, mostly female, drawn in a rhythmical manner with the figures sketched one upon another. The images resemble tales but they are tales in which the story often takes absurd and incomprehensible directions.
While in Göteborg, Ulrika will prepare her solo exhibition at Stenasalen in the Museum of Art, opening Oct.17.

Ulrika is invited by the Iaspis group in Göteborg and stays 2 - 30 October.
